Local Food Fund

A new funding initiative has been announced through the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and Ministry of Rural Affairs to help bring more local food to Ontario consumers.

The Local Food Fund is a three-year initiative with funding of up to $10 million per year to support innovative local food projects that reduce barriers to regional economic development; result in sustainable regional economic development, and have a positive impact on the Ontario economy.

The goal of the Local Food Fund is to increase the purchase of Ontario foods and contribute to increased economic activity (investment, sales and jobs), through the following Local Food Fund outcomes:

  • Increased awareness of and celebration of local food.
  • Influencing Ontarians to demand and choose more local food.
  • Ensuring local food is identifiable and widely available.
  • Helping Ontario’s agri-food sector deliver products that consumers want.
  • Strengthening local food economies from farm to fork.

Invest Canada-Community Initiatives (ICCI) – Funding Program

Invest Canada-Community Initiatives (ICCI), part of the Global Commerce Support Program established in 2008, is designed to help Canadian communities attract, retain and expand Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). ICCI supports not-for-profit and public-private partnerships at the local community level.

The program follows three basic principles: Focusing on supporting the attraction, retention and expansion of Foreign Direct Investment, Work through partnerships, and Sharing costs.

Eligible activities supported by ICCI include: investment training for economic staff, conducting Business Retention & Expansion projects, and identifying strengths and local assets.

ICCI will be open to accept applications in early September 2013 and closing late October 2013 for 2014 projects. ICCI will support 50% of eligible expenses in the form of non-repayable contributions ranging from $3,000 to $300,000 for one year (Jan 1-Dec 31).

Please review Onager’s one page summary of the program or contact us for more information.

Agrimarketing Program

Image

The AgriMarketing Program is a five-year (2013-2018), $341-million program, established by the Federal Government to build on the Growing Forward 2 (GF2) initiative.  This program aims to enhance the marketing capacity and competitiveness of the Canadian agriculture, agri-food, fish and seafood sectors. The program helps industry associations to identify market priorities and equip themselves for success in global markets. It provides funding to develop and implement Long-Term International Strategies (LTIS). AgriMarketing also supports export marketing activities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) through industry associations, as well as funding to support the international marketing of innovative products.

The following program streams are now accepting applications from the industry:

  • Market Development Stream: This stream aims to provide funding to support industry-led efforts that:
  • Expand key export and domestic markets;
  •  Increase capacity to respond to consumer preferences and emerging food trends;
  • Promote awareness and increase sales of Canadian products.
  • Assurance Systems Stream: This stream will provide funding to support the development of Canadian national assurance systems or standards and their related tools, such as food safety systems, animal and plant health surveillance systems, market attribute/quality standards and traceability systems.

Applications received for the Market Development stream prior to March 15, 2013 will receive priority consideration.For both types of applicants, the contribution normally will not exceed 50% of total eligible costs, with a cap of $50,000 per year for SMEs.  However, funding levels may be adjusted upwards where activities are aimed at expanding into new markets and downward where activities are aimed at established market maintenance. Once those applications have been assessed, intake and assessment of new applications will be undertaken on a continuous basis.
